HEISANBOH festival is held every May 5th at KASHIMA shrine in IBARAKI prefecture.

HEISA and NYOBOH have a brake before festival

This is rice planting festival to pray for fertility as like ONDA festival I introduced the other day.


HEISANBOH is an abbreviation for HEISA(japanese men's name) and NYOBOH(it means wife). The origin of the name is that HEISA and NYOBOH played sexual rice planting performance.



At 15:30, after they finished preparation, the festival was started.


At first, the sacred horse run around the shrine 3 times.

This is representation of making rice field.




After that, HEISA go around the shrine as well.




Some audience ladies asked him for the sexual intercourse performance.



It means pray for the prosperity of  descendants.




At the last, HEISA push his phallus to NYOBOH to pray for fertility.



The player of NYOBOH is a man...but the photographers are desperately shoot their sexual intercourse...




This is the main event for audience, but not main ritual in this festival.

The sexual intercourse was just a performance to entertain the audience, it became exaggerated sexual performance gradually.




After finished HEISA and NYOBOH's performance, 2 SATSUKIME girls (girl who plants rice) go in front of shrine. They represent rice planting.



This is the main ritual for the rice planting festival maybe. But, audiences were more excited the sexual intercourse.


In JAPAN, there are a lot of "phallus" faith and festival, but playing sexual intercourse performance is a rare. I want the festival to lust for long.

I heard shocking news in this January.

It is "The DONTSUKU festival come to an end this year".

The DONTSUKU festival is held in INATORI port every year for more than  50 years.

This is not small festival. But according to the news, because of lack of budget, they decided an end of the festival.

So This is the last chance to join the DONTSUKU festival...!  !




The DONTSUKU festival is held in June 1st sunday every year. This is early summer in Japan.

The origin of this festival is that a lot of people died because of epidemic dysentery 200 years ago, so young man wearing TENGU mask had wood carved as phallus and go around villege to ward off the disease .

Because phallus is believed as protection from disease and evil.

(TENGU is japanese folklore character, he is considered as sexual character because he has long nose like phallus.)

Before starting the festival, the phallus deity is moved from shrine at middle of mountain to INATORI port.

The festival start at about 19:00.


At first, 2 TENGUs appear and they has phallus.

They go around the port, and push the phallus to ladies. It is believed as prosperity descendants.



After that, MIKOSHI(portable shrine) carnival start.



The INATORI port is small, but they carry MIKOSHI and run around powerfully.

It close to audience, so it's intense and a little dangerous.







You can ride phallus, before or intermission of the carnival.

I rode the phallus in 2016, but I was excited and fell out from phallus. I heard there is no people have fell out from phallus....I nearly been the first woman who died because of falling out from phallus.

I got black bruise on my leg.

Finish of all, fireworks were set off.




I watched fireworks with eating rice pudding made as phallus.

Wind that blow in early summer was pleasant, I feel this is the best beginning of summer.



I'm so sad an end of the festival, but I'm so glad if you read this sentence come to the festival.

We can get a lot of interesting and sexual amulets in this shrine. The white face character in the biggest amulet at center is OTAFUKU.
